sometimes security it seems to be too efficent. Told to be at the airport 3 hrs ahead of my flight, it took only 15 min to get boarding passes, and another 10 to get thru security. Marrissa looked sorry to see me leave. I could have turned up an hour later without any ill effects.

Anchorage, Tokyo, Osaka, Taipei. Cathy Pacific seems to like flying.over or near major cities. All of the above are impressive cities. Flying such a route over Japan also means that we got an amazing aerial view of Mt. Fuji. When you are flying at 10900m, and a mountain protrudes well up into the sky, you just know it is BIG.

So now I'm in HK airput after my flight from YVR. Arrived gate 70, and i will be departing via gate 62 in about 2 hours. l wandered around the airport for a while, taking in the sights. It does seem that the airport has 802.11b wireless, but I can't connect to it. Some weird security system is in place. I wandered about, looking for various things, such as an Internet café and the price for a Gameboy Advance for Mike. Nothing of the former to be found, but I did find a jewelery store by the name of CyberSun 24/7. Yup, you heard right, a 24 hour jewelery store. Not even the W.H. Smith news vendors were open that much. The GBA I found on special for HK$ 888.

If somebody wants to trace any Hong Kong airport wireless, here are some details:
DNS Server: 218.102.23.228
Gateway, DHCP Server: 210.177.174.52
Netmask: 0xFF000000
All IP adresses allocated seemed to be in 210.177.174.0/26.

One thing that did confound me was the signal strength. Nowhere in the airport was it less than 95%! I roamed all over the airport, and it is a BIG airport.

5 and 1/2 hours into the flight. Passing over Sri Lanka, almost directly over Columbo, then on in a south western bearing, until we were south of the tip of India (Nagercoil), and east of the Maldives we hit some minor turbulence. Or if you want to judge by the actions of one of the atttendants, the baddest turbulence out there. I was waiting to go to the washroom at the time, and he just chased me back to my seat. I later heard the purser chastising him for something else so I would assume he was just a little gung-ho. 25 minutes further into the flight we passed directly over Malë, Maldives confirming my earlier observation abut this airline. Along with several others, I snuck to the washroom when the attendant wasn't looking. Looking back at the in-flight map, it seems we passed directly over Bangkok as well.

Passing the equator soon. It's a pity that airlines don't have Neptune parties. I've crossed the equator at least 10 times in my life, without a single party.

Given that it's 12:28am in south africa i'm going to try and get some more sleep now.

Slept some. Passed over the island of Victoria while sleeping according to Greg. From the map it looks like we are going to fly in via the Madasgarian (i forgot the real name) channel. The floght info says 3h25min left. Greg is leaning on my shoulder to try and sleep. He is unsucessful.

I am usually a man of very little visible emotion. One of the few things that moves me generally is really good music. The type of music in this is very important, it usually has some instrumental backing, and very harmonic vocals.

I find this wonderful music is incredibly rare, but when I do find it, it is simply perfect. There is a bit at the end of a track on the Lord of the Rings CD, and now, on my new CD that I purchased, Ennio Morricone's "The Mission", there are several wonderful tracks. Track 7, "Vita Nostra" in particular is simply amazing in this way.

You just listen to this type of music, and you feel the stress and worries draining out of you, the world doesn't matter for that instant of time. It's almost like a form of meditation.

I want more of this music!

Trailer

It looks like it's going to be a sleeper hit.
Farenheit 451 meets Brave New World meets Matrix.

This is just some advanced notice of something for everybody to take note of.

I'm going to be away from December 14th until January 5th on vacation in South Africa. I have two family weddings to attend and a few other things to do. I'll be flying in with my little brother via Hong Kong. My parents leave the weekend (going via London) before I do, but everybody is returning on the 5th (different routes again tho).

The week before I leave, I'll be mildly busy with final exams.

I plan on delivering Christmas gifts to people I know inside of the next week mainly. If you have anything for me, please send it my way if you don't mind me opening it before I leave. If you don't want me to open it then, hang onto it until I get back from my trip.

Likewise, if you want me to bring something back for you, tell me about it now!

While I am away, there will be a deviation from normal policy, and all the computers in my household will be shut down, with the exception of my server. This is mainly for power saving reasons, but also because I don't trust my Athlon workstation to not cause a fire while nobody is around.

I may use either my main ICQ (#30269588) or my remote ICQ (#41961639) while I'm away. I'll be sharing a laptop with my father, and not taking my own laptop with me. I'll probably check email once a week or so, depending on the availability of internet access wherever I am. The only net access in south africa is dialup or really expensive wireless. A large majority of my relatives and 50% of my grandparents have dialup internet, so that's where I'll be connecting from mainly.

I woke up at 2pm today, after a nice long 11 hours of sleep. Catching up on sleep good :-).

I had an email from Gordon, saying there was an ominous peice of mail for me, from SFU Library loans department. I decide to go down there to take a look at it...

They wanted to bill me $11 in fines, so I went down to see the library people. Get this at what happened: Originally, because I was working for TechBC during the changeover, I got an SFU library number. The only details that were listed for me were staff and my address was entered as TechBC. No phone number. Now, thanks to their lovely policy of changing loan periods from a semester down to 3 weeks, a book I had taken out, originally due 3-January-2002 was now overdue, them having wanted it back on November 18th. They tried to notify me of this fact, via postal mail, which I never recieved, because my address was listed only as TechBC. They also didn't have any email address in the system for me, thanks to the same bloopers. The only reason I got the mail about a large fine was because it got passed thru several people at TechBC SFU@Surrey to get to me. Anyway, after chatting to them, and they found this was the problem, they changed the details they had listed for me in the library system, and cancelled my $11 fine.

I also then took out a tripod for the weekend to do some photography of christmas lights and so forth.

So I haven't updated in a long time.
heh.

I've been insanely busy with schoolwork. I should be doing more of it now, but I really don't feel like it. Yesterday I went with [livejournal.com profile] amethest and [livejournal.com profile] ladyartemis and Mayo to see the new James Bond movie. It was reasonable. I think many of the jokes were a lot weaker than they used to be. And some of the other stuff is just not the way it should be. However I do like some of the technology, like the thermo-optic chamflague (well, they don't call it that, but it was originally seen in Ghost In The Shell, so that's what i'll call it).

After that, Marissa and I went downtown to see the great Dr. Stephen Wolfram of Wolfram Research. The worlds richest and smartest mathematican. His talk about his new book, "A new kind of science" rocked. Super high level math stuff, math that makes the head hurt to absorb too much of it at once, but really cool things in it.

Thru this week, i've been working a lot at TechBC SFU@Surrey and NewMIC, and i've had a lot of assignments, that I'm really struggling under. Anyway, I'm going to go back to them now. :-(
