Since Marissa hasn't updated, here is an update from me now.
Originally, my plan for today was to go down to TechBC SFU@Surrey this morning, to pick up a math handout needed for homework and give Gordon an update on the progress of RATS. This handout has a weird story, because the frigging mySFU system told us we needed 5 textbooks for math. However, when we got to this module for math, all of us find that there is a math text that was NOT listed, and so none of us have it. Additionally the SFU bookstore doesn't have it. So the instructor arranged for some photocopies of the chapter we needed to be made. These were supposed to be delievered to TechBC yesterday (Tuesday) by 9am originally, so we could get them. Then it was 4pm they were supposed to come, then 9am Wednesday, then 1pm Wednesday, and finally they arrived around 3pm. We had to pay $10.56 for each copy to boot. I got Mayo to pick up a copy for me, since he was waiting around all day for them. The rest of the plan called for me to meet Marissa at Production Way skytrain station around 2pm, have lunch with her, let her take a nap at my place while I worked, and then go up to SFU to see Sir Ian McKellen (who played Gandalf in LOTR).

Anyway, now more of what actually happened. I woke up around 11am. Went to my computer, Marissa emailed me because she saw me on my webcam, and we emailed for a big, getting something set up so we could communication in realtime. Ended up using UNIX talkd on the SFU Fraser server. Meh. It worked at least. She had to contact me because all the tickets to see McKellen were sold out :-(. We didn't figure out what to do then, but just said to meet up at the same time as planned. I did, and we went to Lougheed Mall for lunch. We ran into Patrick and Kirin in the food court, and sat with them, talking and eating. Kirin works at the EB there at the mall. Patrick was just hanging because he didn't want to be at home, and didn't have anything else to do. After Kirin went back to work, Patrick, Marissa and myself went to see Micheal Moore's Bowling for Columbine at Coquitlam SilverCity. It's an interesting movie, Moore seems to almost be the Canadian equivilent of South Africa's Leon Schuster. Patrick dropped us off back at Lougheed Mall SkyTrain station afterwards.

While waiting on the platform for a skytrain to take marissa home, Brittney and David got off the skytrain, having just come from TechBC, and were headed home. Brittney was ordering David into bed since he hadn't slept last night. I don't know why he didn't sleep, but I have a few ideas ;-). Anyway, Marissa got on the next skytrain headed to Columbia after that, and I got on the one towards Holdom after that. On my SkyTrain, I ran into Neil's friend Andrew's friend Douglas Dunn (I dunno if Neil knows Douglas, but I would assume so). He was with his girlfriend, who it turns out works at the coffee place in surrey place mall, and I've spoken to her before, not knowing that she was linked to the chain of friends that I have. The world is way way too small.

Software/Website ideas to do sometime:

  • Friend mapping program using MySQL+GraphViz
  • (Sky)Train Spotting website

trying to install linux on an old system
I came accross a wonderful tool

nowadays lots of cds are bootable, and it's the easiest way to install
but the old systems don't support booting off cd.

enter... SBM (http://btmgr.sourceforge.net/)
boot SBM from a floppy, and tell it to continue the boot from the cdrom :-)

Alright listen up. I'm way stressed out so I'm going out of town for the weekend to chill. I know nextweek is TechWeek, but anybody that wants me to work now can go to hell, cause I'm at the end of my tether. If you really need to contact me for something utterly urgent, leave a voicemail on my cellphone at 604-339-5621. If I think it's really really important, I'll call you back, so leave your number. I will check my voice mail a total of four times only.

An analysis of TechBC SFU Surrey student work habits:

Ok, I know I listen to unusual music some of the time now, but recently I've really found something that I enjoy.
techno/dance remixes of 70's, 80's and early 90's music.

One example I'm listening to now, and really enjoying:
Is AquaGen's remix of "Hard to Say I'm Sorry", originally by Chicago.

Here are the lyrics for the new edition and the original (they are the same):
Lyrics )

Funny, how this music really sounds great to me.
I would theorize that it is because I grew up with my father playing this type of stuff, and I've grown to enjoy techno/dance/trance music myself for listening to while I work. I actually think it is a great idea to do music like this. It's a wonderful fusion. The techno people are lacking lyrics and harmony of their own, which they can get from other music, and they contribute their funk and style to the music in return.

I've only got a few other bits like this song at the moment, but I think it definetly an avenue worth exploring.

From what I can see, it has taken off a lot larger in continental europe than anywhere else. Possibly this is due to the impact of 80's music there, and the growth of Techno/Trance/Rave at events like the German Love Parade.

On the subject of Love Parade, if anybody has albums/mp3s from Love Parade, could you please contact me so I can grab some of them?

Ok, So I haven't posted anything (of substantial content) in livejournal in a really long time. This is a quick update now. I bought a wireless card for my Handspring Visor, haven't quite got it working yet, but nearly. I'm very swamped with schoolwork.

I might post again in a day or two.
Back to the infinite grind now.

Yesterday, I went to the Opera (Aïda) with Marissa. On the way, I stopped at a little store I found a couple of weeks ago, and purchased 400 National Geographic magazines. Yes, that is correct, four hundred of them. They weight a LOT and take up quite a bit of room, but I have a lot of them now. I paid $120 for the lot.

Now I just need to sort them and remove duplicates (which I will sell again).

Excerpt from Masters of The Vortex, by E.E. 'Doc' Smith. It is the 7th and final book of his classic Lensman series:

'QX, Joanie, and thanks. I've been wanting to do this more than I ever wanted anything before in my life. But not holding hands, this time. Heart to heart and cheek to cheek.'

'Check - the closer the better.'

They embraced, and again mind flowed into mind; this time with no thought of withholding or reserve on either side. Smoothly effortlessly, the two essential beings merged, each fitting it's tiniest remotest members into the the deepest, ordinarily most inaccessible recesses of the other; fusing as quickly as delicately and as throughly as two drops of water coalescing into one.

In that supremely intimate fusion, that ultimate union of line and plane and cellule, each mind was revelated completly to the other; a revealment which no outside should expect to share.

Ok, so I haven't updated in a long time now. However, there will be more updates coming soon.

I ordered a Handspring Visor Edge last weekend, and it arrived during the week. It is a lot lighter to take to school than my old klunkly laptop. Plus I intend to use it to write up LiveJournal entries on the go.

Schoolwork has been really hectic lately, as next week is an exam week for me. More sleep would be nice, but I don't have time to get it in. The Visor will also help me get more work done on some of this.

I went out with Marissa yesterday, saw 'Signs' @ Capital 6 Theatres, and 'Kilimanjaro: To the Roof of Africa' @ CN IMAX. kilimanjaro is a really awesome movie, great cinematography in it. Plus the fact that natural Africa is a really beautiful place. Has anybody here besides me seen the documentaries about the African Rift Valley by David Attenborough? It was in the series entitled 'The Living Planet' and was circa 1984.

I wanted to try the ribs place that replaced Urban Monk for dinner, but they were playing rap music at an excessive volume, so we went to a little pita place instead. Before heading home, we had ice-cream from Cows on Robson.

In other bits of news, I've bought an additional 40Gb hard drive for $70 to put into my server as another backup drive.

Off to do homework I go now. I have a posting due at 6pm.

Spam

I use a really good automated anti-spam system on my server (SpamAssassin), and I just automatically move all incoming Spam into a folder by that name.

I just checked thru it this morning, and I see two (well three) really funny porn spams.

The first one, "Public Nudity Uncensored" has most of it's content in a big image. However, the ONLY link on the page is for penis enlargement! Is this misleading advertising for porn, or were the creators of this spam just smoking something?

Secondly, riht next to each other, and looking like they come from the same source, there are two spams, "Hairy Vaginas" and "Shaved Vaginas", which advertise exactly the opposite. Eg the "Hairy Vaginas" has pictures of shaved ones, and vice-versa.

Whoever these spammers are, they aren't as bright as they used to be.

Gone away for the weekend to vancouver island.
Back sunday.
robbat2: (Default)

Argh! 2.20am! Too much homework! Anyway, another posting down. Remaining: 1 posting, 1 report, 1 6pg essay, 1 program. The posting and report I need to get done tommorow, and I really need to make a good start on the essay as well.

I'm really stressed out, so I'm taking this weekend off, to get away from things. I'll be on Vancouver Island from Thursday afternoon until Sunday afternoon.

On a side note, nobody gave me the usual warning of "Don't slip" when I went to shower tonight, and I skidded and hurt my hip a bit :-(.
[livejournal.com profile] galaxychild: I guess I've slipped now. So now what?

To bed with me now!

robbat2: (Default)

Hmm, I need more music by this guy. It is incredibly relaxing and wonderful music. I have "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly" soundtrack, which he also did, but I should find more, as it is really good music. Marissa ([livejournal.com profile] amethest) likes music by the composer Thomas Newman, and now I have found a good composer that I like as well. I'm gonna go past Metrotown tommorow and see what CD's they have by him. And maybe actually buy some (the horror!, I'm actually buying a CD!).

But the music is really is really nice.

robbat2: (Default)

Hmm, I really should get to bed. But I digress, I don't want to yet.

The other thing I was going to write about last night, was primarily that I cooked dessert (apple tart) but recived not a word of thanks from anybody in my family for it. All I got were compliants, and there was nothing wrong with it this time. My brother cooked dinner, and he only got complianed at as well, but at least he was thanked for making dinner, even tho he screwed it up and didn't think. Argh!

Today, I went up to SFU this morning, to try and pay my tuition, only to find that they don't take credit card. In today's day and age, the SFU Cashiers do not take credit card. WTF is going on? At TechBC last year, they took credit card for payment, and we were told that the same options were available to us this year. Somebody is not on the level here. So it was a wasted trip up the mountain with my father, including waiting 20 minutes for a parking space in the visitors lot.

After that, we took my aunt to the airport, as she was flying back to South Africa today. She gave me a gift, that she and my maternal grandmother collected together from around the world. A big pile of second hand E.E. 'Doc' Smith books! I am now only a few books short of the ones that he wrote totally on his own, plus there are another 10-15 books that he co-authored that I want to look for. I have the complete Lensman series now, which was the pinnicle of his work. 1920-30's Sci-fi rocks!

I got back from the airport a bit after 3pm, and saw a message from Brittney about the TechBC Learner Assoication. I rushed to a 4pm meeting at TechBC about it. Thank g0d for the new skytrain! Basically we discussed about what was going to happen. So far, we are hoping to create a seperate Campus Student Society at TechBC, in line with the policies of the SFSS. I've basically unofficially volunteered to run for the position involving technical liason with IS/eLINC and lead the computer technical side of the LA with my existing knowledge. Micheal Brolich even introduced me as the resident computer genius to everybody at the meeting. It was attended by lots of TechTwos, a few TechThrees/Fours and a single TechOne. I've got a meeting tommorow, and an even bigger meeting on Monday related to tommorow's meeting, with some politicians. A fair bit of money is in it for me and the group i'm with depending on the outcome of Monday's meeting.

I'm heading to bed now. As you may have noticed, I'm trying to keep more of a daily log of life on LiveJournal now. It might bore some people, but I want to be able to look back at it myself.
