As an update on the Cal's issue, I phoned again a moment ago to ask what computer stuff they will accept and the minimum is Pentium 2 now! Beware anybody that wants to dump stuff there.
robbat2: (programmer)

Ok, so over the years I've collected a LOT of old computer stuff. Everything from 286 up. I also recently acquired a HPPA system (PA-RISC, HP 9000-700, 715/50) and a Rebel Netwinder (StrongArm 110). My mother has been bugging me to get rid of the stuff as well for a long time ;-).

Since the HPPA box didn't come with a hard drive, and it needed a UW 68pin SCSI drive (not larger than 9gb), I had to head out to find one. Cal's computer warehouse had some in stock, I decided to dump my old stuff there at the same time. I phoned them on Friday evening and the guy said they had the drive I wanted, and they took old stuff.

So I loaded up the car, and headed down there this morning. Much to my annoyance, the guy by the name of 'Hany' (picture of the guy here: http://www.goseecal.com/staff.htm) there said they didn't take stuff that old anymore. They didn't even want to take it for free. So now I've got a full trunkload of computer stuff, and I really don't want to take it back.

I came home and was looking for a recycling place where I could dump it. I also asked in the #gentoo-dev channel, where somebody piped up they could take it! I drove over there (~30 minutes away) and unloaded it all, and the car was MUCH lighter on the drive home.

Remember the MySQL core certification exam I wrote back in December before I went away to South Africa?

I knew I passed months ago, and that the certificate was in the mail.

Well it FINALLY turned up today. Postmarked Feburary 22nd. Arrived April 16th.
I have the paperwork, the certificate, two nice pens, a high quality beachball and some stickers 8-).

Now I'm considering taking the Professional Exam.

Little girl, looking out window: Mommy, what's that?
Mother: It's a building
Little girl: What does it do?
Mother: It makes beer
(the building was the molson brewery in new west)
Little girl: it looks yucky, I don't want to drink that beer.

The Psychic Flash Movie debunked, by [livejournal.com profile] robbat2:

Those around the net a lot have undoubtedly seen this little flash animation http://www.flashmindreader.co.uk/, which purports to read your mind and show you the symbol that the number you came up with links to.

So many people have been sending it to me lately, that is has seriously pissed me off because it's just some stupid tricks involved.

The mathematics behind it are incredibly juvenille. Come on people, I learnt this in grade 3. Does nobody else know any of the tricks to check divisiblity in the basic multiplication tables ?

The animation has 5 columns numbered decreasing vertically, as:

9979593919
9878583818
9777573717
9676563616
9575553515
9474543414
9373533313
9272523212
9171513111
9070503010
896949299
886848288
876747277
866646266
856545255
846444244
836343233
826242222
816141211
806040200

To illustrate this simply, when you subtract the sum of digits from each of the numbers in the table, it leaves you with a multiple of 9, like so:
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
816345279
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180
725436180

Now go back and look at any reload of the applet. All the multiples of 9 that turn up above 'conveniently' (except 0, see the note in the next paragraph about it) have the same symbol. A little too convenient don't you think?

It seems the majority of copies of the applet out there contain a bug. The digit 0 should have the same symbol next to it as the multiples of 9 up to 82, but it doesn't in many cases. I believe the programmer used a simple multiple check that fails on 0 and so doesn't put in the correct symbol there.

Would people PLEASE stop sending this stupid thing to me now???
