Stolen Bike

Ok, so I've totally slacked off, and not posted about the rest of OLS2008 yet, but this post is more important than that for now. I was out at the Pride Parade today, then went to meet up with a friend. I locked up my bike at ~17h20, to the racks outside Waterfront Station (I wrote Centre in my Twitter posts, but then realized it was actually Waterfront Station at that spot). I came back at 20h30, to find my bike was gone :-(.

Description: Norco model 7030 (only 95% certain, can't remember exactly), mountain bike. Olive Green and Beige, with some white lines. Front white LED from PlanetBike (batteries quite worn down), no rear light. Stock seat. Rear aluminum pannier rack. Bike lock was an OnGuard Doberman combination lock.

I bought the bike used, almost 3 years ago, from the antiques/junk store on the corner of 31st and Main, for $50. It was probably hot merchandise at the time, but it was a good deal, and in reasonable condition. I've put in probably $50 of maintenance, and the lock+rack were another $40 approximately. Not a lot of money, just enough to be annoying.

You be back here tomorrow sometime? Teri wants Marissa and I to come out to Karaoke on Wednesday, will you join us as well?

Ugh, that's terrible. Honestly my biggest fear while biking in the city. I have a Kryptonite lock- it's really heavy, but super sturdy and intimidating. Though I've heard that if someone REALLY wants your bike nothing will stop them, a lock is just a temporary deterrent for those less ambitious.

+1. We were discussing how if someone really wanted to, they can just take the bike, one way or another...

My husband is from Amsterdam. They almost always spend more on the locks than on the bike! As a matter of fact, most Amsterdammers buy a bike and start dinging it up so it doesn't look so nice. That way, it's less likely to get stolen.

Sorry it happened to you. It sucks, royally. It's such an invasion, regardless of the costs involved.

does he have any input beyond on the table of lock properties and attacks that I constructed? I wouldn't say my bike looked fancy, it was used when I bought it, and I put another 3 years of cycling at least 3 times/week on it.

In that region of downtown, if you had to leave a bike locked up, where would you leave it? I left it there because there was a lot of foot-traffic there, and I was going further into the eastside/gastown where I really didn't want to leave it.

Haha the irony is I was on the far end of gastown, from you at the same time as you were down there, any closer and we may have bumped into each other.

I walked clear through GasTown, and ate dinner at Incindenio pizza.
