Sorry about the latency in this, but I was in California at the conference.
I rent, 1.5 bedroom/1 bathroom basement suite. I have my own (non-shared) washer+dryer. Base rent is $800, my share of utilities is ~$90 (gas/electric). Upstairs of the house is also rented out (separate entrances, no connection between up/down), the landlord is cool guy that lives in West Van. My upstairs housemates have two outdoor cats, "Stella" and "Lucia".
My neighbour across the street has a similar basement suite to mine, also goes for around $800. She's cat friendly - has a large Ginger outdoor cat "Lover", and also ends up a large but friendly dogsitting for a friend quite often.
Pricing and availability vary a lot depending on the area. Judging by the noticeboard at the closest little supermarket (Buy Low Foods), I'd say for good places, there's slightly more supply than demand at the moment. The market with roommates however is very busy, seems to lots of demands for roommates to help cut costs.
Well I definitely don't want a roommate. I lived with girls for almost 3 years and hated it. I'm looking to live on my own, especially since I live a green-ish lifestyle. Bachelors in Toronto start at $650 and the min. for a 1 bedroom here is $800, so it sounds similar. Now that I think I have a real job, have to call to confirm tomorrow, I have more money to work with for housing. I'll be working in downtown Vancouver, but I doubt I'll find something reasonable around work.
