I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts...
Actually, I've just been having a minor argument over what a coconut looks like. So here is some research from the web

coconut Equivalents: 1 whole = 3-4 cups grated; 1 tablespoon grated dry = 1 ½ tablespoons fresh grated; 6 cups grated = 1 pound. Notes: The most common form of coconut in markets is the dry coconut, with a hard brown shell surrounding firm coconut meat with liquid in the center. 

Young Coconut

To conclude what was pointed out to me as a coconut, is actually a young coconut, which is why I did not recognize it. Looking at the life cycle of coconuts, when they are fully ripe, the green shell on the outside falls off, leaving the brown hairy part I am familiar with.
