I should be working on my operating systems assignment, but I really don't feel like it. So I'm sitting here, listening to Alanis Morissette (before that was Queen).

So I guess i'll summarize that last little while.

The PHP conference (Thursday-Friday) went well, I've put up the slides from my presentation on my webpage. Photos here. My talk on phpMyAdmin was packed :-). The mention of cross-database support was well recieved, as it's long been desired for phpMyAdmin.

The first evening, I went out for dinner with Rasmus Lerdorf, Sterling Hughes, Ilia Alshanetsky and Andrei Zmievski. Ate @ Steamworks, as it was close. The food wasn't wonderful, but the beer was good.

Went to the conference party after that, didn't drink too much. Sterling, for what seems to be a common occurance for him, got very drunk. "Hey! You're supposed to hit the cueball and not the 12-ball!". He would rival Mike Cox, but he stayed standing unlike Mike.

The prizes for the draw at the end of the conference were good, including a grand prize of a 15GB iPod. I wanted to win it, but alas, it was not to be :-(.

Sunday was Von's birthday party. Pictures here, including one of Amy!. Was interesting. Met one of the Eric's, who it turns out is Melanie Sia's (a TechBC girl) ex-bf. Strange to see how the groups of people have fractured since we left high school. I went my own way, the only one @ TechBC, and the majority of the others went to UBC, where they still split up some. The RPG people, and the girls.

Blah. I'm going to try to work on that OS assignment some more, after I grab some milk.

As a followup to the article I posted the other day, OCZ has come clean, and found that their supplier was decieving them. A full recall of any and all OCZ Ultra 2 is now being conducted. More details here: http://www.warp2search.net/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=16083.

Do you use a silver thermal paste for your CPU / Heatsink junction?
Turns out some manufacters don't even have any silver in their claimed silver paste... :
http://www.overclockers.com/articles938/

I just use industrial grade copper paste myself (and it's easier to clean off...), and copper conducts better than silver last time I checked.

umm, yeah... I knew my spelling as reasonably good, but I wouldn't consider myself a grammer nazi in general. That job belongs to editors such as those of the GWN.

Grammar Fuhrer
You are the grammar Fuhrer. All bow to your
authority. You will crush all the inferior
people under the soles of your jackboots, and
any who question your motives will be
eliminated. Your punishment is being the bane
of every other person's existence, because
you're constantly contradicting stupidity.
Everyone will be gunning for you. Your dreams
of a master race of spellers and grammarians
frighten the masses. You must always watch your
back. If only your power could be used for good
instead of evil.

What is your grammar aptitude?

Lately I've found myself not listening to music in my collection, but instead live shoutcast streams, mainly from the scandanavian regions. (Rise FM: http://yp.shoutcast.com/sbin/shoutcast-playlist.pls?rn=838&file=filename.pls). There is just something that these stations have that isn't in my massive collection of MP3. I can't put my finger on it, but it's either variety or total randomness, partially coupled with the fact that I can't control the next song at all.

From a friend:

And that folks, is why I have a seriously tweaked iptables firewall on Linux.

I don't know what it is lately, but I've been inundated with job offers, and I mean it seriously.

  1. Vive @ SFU (SSHRC-INE - database, configuration management, project management, web rendering, etc.)
  2. Gordon @ SFU (research sysadmin for next semester, conditional on some SFU politics)
  3. web development company downtown (PHP consultant/developer)
  4. Julie @ SFU (web dev and misc.)
  5. A guy from the PHP Meetup last night (PHP consultant/developer)
  6. Business card passed to my mother today while she was shopping, from somebody that has heard of me (PHP consultant/developer)
  7. Email from another guy that attends lots of PHP meetups [but wasn't there last night] (PHP consultant/developer)

(Note: I've not listed who some of the companies/people are my discretion to keep things private).

Seriously, is it normal to have this many unsolicited job offers? I'm not complaining, just wondering what the hell is going on, as I haven't asked for any employment at all (but I am looking).

For reference, here is my resumé: http://www.orbis-terrarum.net/?l=people.robbat2.resume.

For all of them, I'm only looking for part-time work, to go along with my studies.
