Yay! I figured it out.
It was a piece of bad RAM.
I'm going to get it replaced this afternoon, on my way to the local 2600 meeting.
So this afternoon I can finally get my computer all sorted out, and migrate all my critical stuff over from this system to my new computer.
The only thing that really remains then after that, is to get ethernet cabling to my room upstairs neatly, and get a desk up there to put my computer on.
